Working Scientifically in Year Six

10 December 2024 (by raustin)

In Science, we have been been developing our knowledge of evolution and inheritance to get better at the Big Idea of Biology. As scientists we are always developing our enquiry techniques to get better at working scientifically too.

Inspired by Darwin who investigated the reason why finches in The Galpagos Islands have evolved different shaped beaks, Year Six recreated an experiment to understand how different beak types are better adapted for different foods. Using spoons, chopsticks, tweezers and pegs to represent the beaks and marbles, rubber bands, paper clips and marshmallows to represent different types of foods, they observed how many items of “food” they could transfer to a container. After considering variables we would change and keep the same, we conducted the investigation and recorded our results. We then represented the data in a line graph and interpreted our results. Linking this back to Darwin’s findings, we understood that organisms evolve over millions of years, adapting their characteristics to match their habitat, creating new species. Organisms (such as the finch) that were well adapted to their environment have more chance of survival. Working like scientists has helped us develop our knowledge of evolution and apply our learning from the topic.
