Year 2 Portrait Artists!

7 November 2024 (by Chrissie Clifton (cclifton))

During the last week of term Year 2 had Art Week, where our focus has been portraits. We learnt about the two types of portrait, grandeur and realistic. We looked at many different artists work including Leonardo Da Vinci,  Cindy Sherman, David Hockney, Kehinde Wiley and Lubaina Himid to name a few. We then looked at how emotions and moods can be conveyed in a portrait, especially when the subject is not smiling.

We spent a full day focusing on the work of Thomas Gainsborough, learning how he made adjustments to miniature self-portraits to improve them. We gave this a go ourselves and created textures in our drawings using cross hatching and shading. We then identified Gainsborough's use of cool colours for his subject and warm colours for his background, and discussed whether we thought this helped to create a luxurious and harmonious portrait.
Our final project was to take portrait photographs of our class partner using digital cameras. We viewed portraits taken by artists Andy Warhol and Tyler Mitchell before deciding what style we wanted to follow for our own photographs. We considered our choice of background colour, how to frame the photo, lighting and posing before capturing our shots! After creating frames for our photographs, we held a class exhibition where we viewed each other's work. We discussed the different compositions, moods and colours created by each other. Our teachers were so impressed, they are convinced there are many future artists in Year 2.
