This week in Year Two, we have been celebrating Black History Month! The Black History Month theme this year is ‘Reclaiming Narratives’.

As a year group, we are keen young readers who love stories so we celebrated ‘Black Voices in Literature’. And the voice we celebrated was none other than the talented and amazing, Malorie Blackman!

We really enjoyed the narrative written by Malorie Blackman called ‘We’re Going to Find a Monster!’ In the story, two siblings, Charlie and Eddie travel through different habitats, meeting different animals while they are trying to locate the ‘monster’. It was the first time some of us heard the story, and we all loved it so much that we wanted to write our own version of the narrative, inspired by Malorie Blackman!

In our Creative Writing lesson, we planned and wrote two of our own sections of the narrative, which involved having Charlie and Eddie travel through habitats that they didn’t travel through in the original story! We used our previously taught Scientific knowledge on ‘Living Things’ and their habitats, from our Biology topic earlier in the term. This helped us to plan and write fantastic versions of the story!

Malorie Blackman has increased the levels of our love towards reading, and we cannot wait to read more of her books!
