Storytelling in Reception18 October 2024 (by Natalie (nski)) |
In Reception, we have a timetabled Storytelling guided session every day and our books follow a half-termly theme. This half-term's theme is "Feelings and Emotions" and we focus on one book each week.
At the beginning of the week we introduce the book and the vocabulary and after reading the book, we focus on questions such as "Who are the characters in the story" and "What's the problem?". We continue to read the book everyday, as we introduce repeated refrains and explore how the characters might be feeling during the key events in the story. In the middle of the week we begin introducing props and images to help the children sequence the story. We use First, Next, Then and Finally, as we help the children organise the events in the book. Remembering the story sequence, we draw the story map together and learn how to use it to re-tell the story. Finally, as the children become familiar with the book and confident in retelling the story, we ask them to draw the story map independently and what a fantastic job they do!.
So, what was this book about? Well, Ruby likes red blocks, Benji likes blue blocks. But what happens when they won't share? Can they solve this problem? And what will happen when Guy joins their play with green blocks?
