Rock Detectives

11 October 2024 (by raustin)

In Year 3 we have been developing our knowledge of materials to help us get better at understanding Chemistry. After exploring how soil is made up of different layers, we observed that soil is made up of rock.

As scientists, we used a magnifying glass to look closely at rocks to explore how they are the same and how they are different. We looked at granite, pumice, sandstone, gneiss, chalk and marble. Here are some observations that the Year Three scientists made:

I noticed that the granite is super sparkly because it is made up of lots of crystals. It is very hard too.

I noticed that the sandstone is a yellow, sandy colour and made up of speckly grains. It has stripy layers

I noticed that the marble is a hard and white. I could crystals in it too.

I noticed that the gneiss rock has stripey layers.

We realised that we had observed and described the different properties of rocks. Using our observations, we sorted and grouped the rocks based on these different properties.
