Powerful Portraits

30 September 2024 (by Katherine Gillard (kgillard))

Year 4 pupils are extremely proud of their portraits.

Year 4 pupils were extremely proud of their final paintings influenced by other portrait artists such as Hans Holbein, Matt Small, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye and Kehinde Wiley. Year 4 pupils have been exploring how many portrait artists over the years have been fascinated by the royal family and have used kings and queens are inspiration for artworks. They learned that portraiture has evolved throughout different eras and artistic movements. They were also introduced to Kehinde Wiley, a contemporary artist, who enjoys reinventing traditional portraiture. Wiley's subjects are often modern-day people from the community who he paints posing like regal members of society. This lead to a discussion about the importance of feeling valued and being proud of who you are.

Applying previously learned and newly learned painting skills, the children thought about subjects they would like to celebrate in their painting. Several children painted Greta Thunberg (their class is named after her) posing like a royal figure.
The Y4 children will get more time to practise their painting skills during future art topics and other curriculum subjects.
