Beautiful Books

Enjoying our class libraries

Several Year 6 children were enjoying choosing their next home reading book from their class library today. Our class libraries have a selection of fiction, poetry and non-fiction texts. The libraries also include books that have been recommended by members of staff and other pupils....and there is a space in the class library for books that the class have already read because children often like to re-read familiar texts.

Our class libraries are like mini-bookshops where our pupils can browse a book of their choice. The beautiful, outward facing books do the talking and entice our pupils over. At London Fields, we make sure that every book in our library is worth reading and we make sure we get the books right too. Our books are selected:
  • to elicit a response (excitement, interest, curiosity, anger)
  • expose pupils to a strong narrative structure and intriguing illustrations
  • to extend children's vocabulary
  • to connect with something our pupils know
  • to help our pupils establish their place in the world
  • to help our pupils find a voice
