Creative Writing in Y424 September 2024 (by Katherine Gillard (kgillard)) |
Year 4 pupils were inspired by their assembly theme 'New Beginnings' to write wonderful poems.
Each week during our assembly times, we explore a theme such as Identity, Perseverance, Sustainability, Collaboration, Making the most of opportunities and many more. These assembly times are a key time in the school day where we support the children's spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. It is also a key time to ensure we are working towards our school's vision, making ensure our children's mind can not only think but also feel well. One theme we explored at the start of the year was 'New Beginnings'. We talked about what new beginnings we might experience in our school lives and in our lives outside of school. We explored a range of emotions associated with new beginnings and took comfort from the fact that the emotion we had at the start of the new year was similar to lots of other people's emotions- including the teachers! This theme inspired Year 4 pupils to write a poem in their Creative Writing Lesson. They applied their previously taught English knowledge (including descriptive techniques such as noun phrases, similes and alliteration) when writing their poems but used their assembly reflections for ideas, vocabulary and content.
Year 4 produced lots of fantastic poems. Many poems acknowledged the children's apprehension about starting the new school year but also highlighted the excitement and hope for the year ahead.
