Inspired by Ilori!12 October 2023 (by Katherine Gillard (kgillard)) |
Year 6 have been inspired by the artist Yinka Ilori (many of you may remember that we named a class after him a few years ago!). Ilori is best known for his bold use of bright colours and playful designs. We explored a range of his designs (which made many of us say 'WOW!' when we saw them). We especially loved his 'Colourful Palace'. We discovered that many of his designs have been influenced by his Nigerian heritage. The Colourful Palace, which was located in Dulwich Picture Gallery, is a celebration of colour and pattern. It is also a reflection of multicultural London. Dutch wax prints on display in a Lagos Market, and mirrored in London’s ‘Little Lagos’ in nearby Peckham, inspired the bold, geometric pattern of the structure.
The Year 6 children have been challenged to design a new building for London Fields Park. When they were designing their building, they were inspired to also think carefully about how to reflect the local community, how they might use their heritage and other experiences to influence their design and how they might use colour to make an impact!
Ilori grew up very near to London Fields Primary School.......and it got us thinking.....could there be the next Ilori sitting in our classroom!?
